About Luggages

A suitcase is a general term for a distinguishable form of luggage. The well-known brands of luggage nowadays are Romwa from Germany, Samsonite and American Tourister from United States, Antler from United Kingdom, Delsey and Elle from France...etc.

Originally, suitcases were made of wool or linen. Leather also became a popular material for suitcases. It was used to cover wood suitcases or just on its own for collapsible suitcases. It is difficult to document all the materials suitcases have been made out of.

Like all produced consumer goods the materials chosen to construct suitcases are truly a product of their time. Wool, wood, leather, metal, plastic, fiber composite even recycled materials are all common suitcase materials. During covered wagon times trunks were a popular form of transporting goods. The ride was rough, so the luggage had to be strong. The theme of suitcases becoming less cumbersome over time could be directly related to the advancement of better transportation.

Luggage nowadays are usually made of the following materials:

Nylon

This material is made from a resilient synthetic polymer fibre and is used by many bag manufacturers to make lightweight style bags. Ribstop another plain-weave nylon fabric is a lightweight wind and water resistant material often used to make sporting and outdoor apparel.

With inter-woven ribstop material, many bag manufacturers are able to produce a variety of lightweight bags in different colours and thickness, ideal for carrying items such as clothing, footwear, coats and jackets. However, because nylon luggage is not reinforced it would not generally be suitable for carrying valuable items that could be easily damaged if a heavy bag was dropped onto it (for example in a baggage collection depot).

Polycarbonate

This is a lightweight thermoplastic material ideal for manufacturing luggage because of its flexible and impact resistant properties.  Polycarbonate is widely used to make products that require high heat resistance (such as bullet proof glass and eyewear) it is ideal for use in the manufacture of hard luggage.

Today, it is widely used by the major luggage manufacturers to make fashionable hard-sided luggage in bold designs to meet the travel demands of consumers.  In general, by having luggage encased by a stylish hard polycarbonate shell, a traveller’s possessions should be well protected when their bags have been stored with hundreds of other items of heavy luggage in the baggage hold of a train, airplane or ship.

Polyester

This material is another synthetic very resilient fibre made from polyethylene terephthalate that is used in light or heavy woven or knitted fabrics.  Because polyester is does not wrinkle and holds its shape, it is widely used by bag manufacturers to make lightweight travel bags and sports bags.

Although polyester fabric is weather resistant, dyes well and resists fading, it is not the most long-lasting or hard-wearing type of fabric available on the market mainly because it can be prone to ripping or tearing.  However, because a polyester bag is generally less expensive when compared to other items of luggage it would be ideal for carrying items such as clothing on a short one or two day trip.
